Talia Herman
Talia Herman recently added me to her mailing list, and I was struck by her new, as-yet-unpublished series, tentatively titled With Daughters: Rewilding in the American West. A lively email exchange ensued, which I enjoyed very much. The image is of Herman’s older daughter.
In this body of work, she documents her family life. The intimacy is palpable. There are aspects of Herman’s images that remind me of Sally Mann’s portraits of her children. But Herman captures chaos, and in this rawness, there’s a broad beauty.
A graduate of the Documentary and Photojournalism program at ICP, and now on their teaching faculty, Herman also holds a B.A. in Social and Historical Inquiry from Eugene Lang College at the New School, both in New York.
She is based in the San Francisco Bay Area and has shot for The New Yorker, Airbnb, Rolling Stone and The New York Times.
