Katharina Poblotzki

The German-American photographer Katharina Poblotzki makes portraits built on trust. Over the years, her subjects have included Sofia Coppola, Miranda July, Kiki Smith and Chan Marshall of Cat Power. Pictured here is the Icelandic artist and activist Ísold Halldórudóttir on the set of Touched, a film directed by Poblotzki's friend Claudia Rorarius. The image is included in her exhibition Closer to the Sun, on view at Deutsches Haus at NYU until January 8.

Intimacy is the throughline in her work. By allowing herself to be vulnerable, she draws vulnerability, authenticity and strength from her subjects. It is also what connects her work to Frame's and Lawson's.
