Greg Girard
Greg Girard’s HK:PM Hong Kong Night Life 1974–1989 is one of those books that never loses its charge. I’ve visited Hong Kong several times — for both personal trips and production work — and I’m completely taken with the city. By the time I first saw it, post-handover, most of the seediness Girard photographed had already been scrubbed away. But his images, shot on Kodachrome and Ektachrome positive film and soaked in artificial light, feel so vivid and immersive that it’s as if I’d witnessed those scenes myself. The depth of those nighttime colors carries an almost impossible nostalgia: longing for a city I never knew.
The playfulness of visual surprise and the focused discipline of craft found in his work make for an irresistible mix.
