Stephen Gill
Stephen Gill’s photographs are held in major collections including London’s National Portrait Gallery, Tate, and the V&A — though he’s perhaps best known for The Pillar.
Using a motion-sensor camera mounted to a wooden post, Gill captured candid images of birds and other animals in a field. In one image, all you see is the tip of wing. In another, crows are fighting mid-air (perhaps over who gets to rest on the pillar), and in yet another, a fox is seen meandering through the wintry field.
Shot in all seasons and weather, these images are arresting — not just for bird lovers, but for anyone seeking out awe and wonder.
The book The Pillar, published by Nobody Books and accompanied by a beautiful essay by Karl Ove Knausgård, has won multiple awards.
